Bob Graham Walk 2012

Report of the Bob Graham Walk 2012

The Bob Graham Round(BGR) is normally a fell running challenge in the English Lake District. It’s start and finish is in the town of Keswick and covers 42 fell tops involving 66 miles with 26,900ft of ascent.

How this walking challenge ever came about that some Denbury Boys would try to walk this route in 4 days including camping out each night is now lost in the mist of time.  My only thought on this is that it was proposed towards or just after when the Denbury Boys walked the coast to coast in 2011.Unfortunatly the uptake from the Group was very poor for this challenge.

It is now over 8 years since this challenge took place and the Denbury Boys has lost one of its biggest supporters of walking events Bob Watham who you will see took part.

Admin/Support for the event was Ted Kilpin & Phil Kirk

Walkers who eventually volunteered for the event Bob,myself & Ellie McCalman(Booth as she was then)for first aid cover, well she is a fully trained mid-wife which was more medical training than Bob or myself had !!!

Not all Denbury Boys walking events are/were successful as this was the exception-we failed. The weather over the first 2 days was awful as we were drenched through at the end of day 2 as can be seen in the photo’s.Towards the end of day 1 we thought we had lost Bob as he had taken a very bad fall amongst the boulders of Great Gable fell top. When we got down to him he had luckily landed on his back with the rucksack taking most of the impact.Lucky Bob and he knew it !!

Therefore end of day 2 we called it a day.The photo’s on route numbers 15-19 & 25-35 have never seen the light of day before even by Ellie.I hope you enjoy reading and viewing this article in memory of Bob a great walking companion for any who had the pleasure of walking with him RIP.
